TMIV is back with another episode in his Google Earth-ified video series, “Exploring the Los Angeles Metro Rail System”. This time he looks at the near future of the rail system, exploring the Purple Line, the Gold Line Extension, and the yet-to-be-colored Expo Line.  One great thing about this series is that TMIV includes Google Earth KML files that you can load into Google Earth and have the pretty colored lines of our Metro Rail system (with big fat Metro M’s representing each station) on Google’s nifty 3D earth.  Note that TMIV has decided to make the Expo Line aqua in color, and it looks damn good.

As far as I know, Chris Hume’s “Beneath Los Angeles” is the only documentary film made about the construction of the Metro Red Line. That fact alone makes this a must see movie for transit-enthusiasts, not to mention those interested in the projects that have shaped our city and region. In my opinion, a $5billion public works project should have a number of documentaries devoted to it, but it looks Chris was the only filmmaker in a city of “filmmakers” who gave a shit.

I took this video yesterday after the Mayor held a press conference in front of the Hollywood/Highland Red Line station promoting the MTA’s free ride program on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve.

Added on Thursday, November 30th, 2006

Can you live without a car in LA, the epicenter of America’s automobile obsession?

This well made short film follows a young freelance video editor who successfully navigates the streets of Los Angeles via skateboard, bus, and rail. No car required.

MetroMovies:Gold Line Tunnel Boring Celebration

Added on Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

Jacob Soboroff of LA Observed goes underground and brings us video of the Gold Line Tunnel Boring Celebration. “Lola”, one of two tunnel boring machines being used in the East Side Extension finally finished its 1.7 mile dig into Boyle Heights on November 16th and the Metro crew was there to celebrate. Soboroff even gets a little time in with the Mayor. Good stuff.

I found this video on Google Video posted by TMIV. It’s a broad and basic overview of the Los Angeles rail transit system. Good for the n00bz.
