Update Your Bookmarks: metroriderla.com

Added on Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

In the spirit of the changes that come about with the new year, MetroRiderLA is proud to introduce its new domain on the interwebs, metroriderla.com.  Please update your bookmarks and links to reflect this change.

The metrorider.elhay.net address now redirects to the new domain.  Also, metroriderla.org will take you to this site.

A few comments on the Zipcar thread were lost in the transition, but I will get those up as soon as I can.

2008 Arrives At Last, And In Style

MetroRiderLA 2008

Sure, technically the new year began 14 days ago, but I wouldn’t know it. I’ve been hard at work re-imaging MetroRiderLA both visually and conceptually for 2008.

Clearly there’s a new layout. This is the heart of the changes. It’s a Wordpress theme that I built from scratch (my first one!) and it was designed to specifically address some issues that I (and others) had with the original MetroRiderLA template. In addition to color (at last!), I’ve tried to heavily orient the layout around the community, which has become one of the strongest features of the site. People love to talk here, and I want to make sure it’s easy and fun. Let’s go over all the changes.

2008: The Year in Transit

Added on Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

The Year in Transit is not the most important thing to look forward to this year, but it is the brightest spot in a year filled with the tedium that is the unfortunate byproduct of leap years. The first comes in the form of the Summer Olympic Games, this year in Beijing. American athletes usually dominate the games so much that they made winning go out of style. The must-see event is the opening ceremonies, where the United States formally passes the torch of world’s only superpower to the host country, China. How often is there a chance to make the symbolic literal? Then comes another pointless quadrennial ritual that occurs every November but fortunately is only participated in by half of all adults and by all indications, like oil production and newspaper readership, trends downward to the point of losing all relevancy and simply be forgotten. There is, after all, segments of the population that view these trends with a smidgen of hope. It’s not large, and not welcome in most communities and places of business. But The Year in Transit salutes you.

The last thought ran on too long, and the transition to this thought about politics is therefore not that fluid. A young almanac is precocious enough to discuss politics, and has a surprisingly vivid memory of events dating back to the terrible toddler years. The year 2008 offers unique reflection not of the more timely prior year, but an eight-year epoch of monumental importance. The Year in Transit uses this opportunity to write history’s first draft.

Don’t worry. The predictions are here, as usual. The introduction is longer than in year’s past, because 2008 offers a time of unmitigated spleen-venting that comes along, well every four years. That’s just too long to wait.

Ride Free On New Years Eve!

Added on Friday, December 28th, 2007

Sick of getting murdilated on the streets by drunk drivers? Me too. And so is Metro. Therefore, on New Years Even Metro is opening the not yet built fare gates to any and all between 9pm and 2am. All buses and rail in the Metro system are free so put away your car keys or better yet, throw them away forever, and get on board!

To make this even more appealing to all, everyone comment on as many Metro accessible New Years festivities as you can come up. Bars, clubs, dance offs, whatever! Bring it on!

Edit: According to Metro all trains will be running all night on Dec. 31 and into Jan. 1 with 20 minute headways. I guess after 2 am you have to pay! -Fred 12/28/07 11:00am

Technical Difficulties: Solved!

Added on Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Well that was fun.

For those who were wondering, I am alive and well, and now so is MetroRiderLA.  Here’s what happened:  a few weeks ago the blog stopped loading in browsers for unknown reasons and around the same time I came down with the nasty cold bug that has been going around which made me miss some of my paid work for a few days, which I’ve been catching up with along with the stresses of the holiday season have left me with no time to diagnose and fix whatever problem has been ailing the site.  So I just put up a message until I could get the time to properly address the issue.

The problem was finally addressed.. a buggy Google Analytics plug-in was the culprit.  The guilty plug-in has since been destroyed and hopefully for everyone the site is once again visible.

This being said, the hiatus is likely to continue through to the end of the year due to the holidays and I want to take the time to implement some improvements to the sites functionality and design for the new year.  So stay tuned in 2008 for a new and improved MetroRiderLA.

Happy Holidays!!!

Bon Voyage

I will be leaving today for a two-week vacation in Europe.  I’m excited to check out European transit systems from the angle of a tourist and a Los Angeles transit advocate for the first time (last time I was in Europe I was still a driver).  Destinations will include Paris, Bordeaux, London, and Dublin - expect reports on each of them upon my return.

Until then posting may be light, it’s up to the other contributors, but I’m sure you all will keep busy in the comments section modding one another down until everyone is labeled “troll”.

Take it easy MetroRider’s.
