Pasadena’s good idea

Added on Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Pasadena posts maps of the Gold Line and buses that serve the city at major bus stops. At left is the map, and at right is the service frequency chart. This chart is at the southwest corner of Lake Avenue and Walnut Street.

Pasadena deserves props for mounting very useful maps at its bus stops. The maps, about 17″x11″, include all services within the city, not just the local Area Rapid Transit System buses.

The maps also include a table that lists how frequently the Metro Gold Line and the various bus services run. They do not contain the schedules, though, but some bus stops have ARTS schedules.

These maps are not at every stop; they are mounted on the walls of sheltered stops at busy intersections. However, Pasadena makes PDF versions of the map and service table.

Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl was chosen to be chairman of the Southern California Regional Airport Authority, according to The Argonaut. The group, brought out of dormancy, is trying to give airport regionalization a go. But Rosendahl’s interests go beyond what goes on within airports.

Rosendahl, whose Westside district includes Los Angeles International Airport, has been vocal about public transportation improvements in the area. A big part of his campaign is to extend the Green Line to LAX, then up past the airport along Lincoln Boulevard.

He mentions planning and funding efforts in his December 7, 2006 blog entry:

Everyone walks in L.A.

Added on Friday, January 19th, 2007

Los Angeles City Nerd published a list of the 10 most walkable streets in the city of Angels. It’s a very good read.

MetroRiderLA, the transportation nerd equivalent of City Nerd, has a value-added list, showing how to get to these places via public transportation.

This list follows after the jump:

Steve Lopez will fix traffic problems

Added on Thursday, January 18th, 2007

… or at least win a Pulitzer Prize for talking about it.

Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez is working the angle of his career in Los Angeles: talking about traffic congestion on the Westside. Traffic problems plague the entire county — no, the region — but no area can claim as many white, affluent and well-educated drivers that are prized by advertisers and marketers to warrant attention. Orange County can, but that’s Register turf.

He even has a comments section for you to post your what-for on the matter. Post them there, not here (comments are off).

Pershing Square mercury spill

Added on Thursday, January 18th, 2007

The Los Angeles Times reports on a December 22 incident where a person appeared to be pouring mercury at the Pershing Square Metro Red/Purple Line station. The article also has video of the incident from KTLA-Channel 5.

What had been originally thought of as a “harmless accident” is now being looked at as sheriff’s deputies blew the response.

From the article:

Saying that “basic protocols were not followed,” MTA Chairwoman Gloria Molina today ordered an immediate investigation about what went wrong.

[...]

The MTA has focused less attention on training for problems that involve chemicals and biological agents. While the agency has installed a gas detection system, workers have not been fully trained on how to deal with reports of hazardous materials.

That’s how they roll

MetroRiderLA is not the only blog exploring the many transportation options available to Angelenos. We’re just the best.

LAist took its bicycles and pedaled the Orange Line’s parallel bikeway. And the LA Straphanger is doing ride reports. Routes covered have included Metro Line 152/153, LADOT’s Bunker Hill Shuttle, Glendale Beeline Line 5 and Norwalk Transit Line 1.

Happy lurking.
