The Key To Metro’s Financial Woes

Added on Friday, January 11th, 2008

There’s been talk as of late about the much maligned and for most politicians, wish they could scrap, Prop 91. I will be voting YES on this measure but I’ll be doing so somewhat uncharismatically for I don’t believe this will insure much of anything for public transit’s future here in Los Angeles. For you see, the key to Metro’s financial woes lies not in the state’s hands and their twisting of laws to suit their faulty policies, but in Metro’s own sly, greasy, shifty little hands.

What I’m saying is, why just get paid for a service offered when stealing is so much easier?

Support The WGA With Public Transit

Added on Thursday, January 10th, 2008

For the past three+ months Los Angeles has nearly come to a complete production halt costing the city of Los Angeles hundreds of millions of dollars. Now there are some pluses to such a halt in that the roads are much less congested and my bus time to work has been nearly halved since the beginning of the writers’ strike. But aside from this and the cancellation of the circle jerk… err, the Golden Globe Awards, there aren’t any more. Now I’m not going to tell anyone which side one should or shouldn’t take but if you do side with the writers then here’s how to support them– by public transit of course.

Seeing as all the protests (the classic sign in hand kind) are near the studios to which the WGA is protesting, parking will be atrocious unless you have access to said studio lots/buildings. Therefore, to help you avoid the crisis of parking and to help save your energy that would be wasted on yelling at other drivers, here’s a quick guide on where the protests are and which transit lines get you there. And remember to check back every week with the new list on where the strikers will be and how to get there by public transit.

Musician Surge

Transit blues

Playin’ away those transit blues. (Image provided by openended via Flickr.)

Much like Bush’s troop surge, Metro musicians are in surge mode all over the red line’s stations and just like the troops they’re betting on anyone caring at all. But will there be enough of them to really make an impact on our future red line excursions?

Suspicion Confirmed

Added on Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

For some time I’ve been under the suspicion that bus drivers had a certain beef with bike riders boarding a bus, if not at least an annoyance for. There has never really been much indisputable evidence; I’ve never been slapped or spat upon or just plain passed (actually I have but I had no bike at the time). So without such hard evidence to prove my theory I figured it was just in my head. I make up a lot of things in my life. If I were to explain some of the neurosis in my head some might label me theoretically insane if not clinically. But I get by with boarding the bus as fast as I can and try to ignore the theoretical rays of hatred emitting from the bus driver’s eyes. Theoretical until last night that is.

Ride Free On New Years Eve!

Added on Friday, December 28th, 2007

Sick of getting murdilated on the streets by drunk drivers? Me too. And so is Metro. Therefore, on New Years Even Metro is opening the not yet built fare gates to any and all between 9pm and 2am. All buses and rail in the Metro system are free so put away your car keys or better yet, throw them away forever, and get on board!

To make this even more appealing to all, everyone comment on as many Metro accessible New Years festivities as you can come up. Bars, clubs, dance offs, whatever! Bring it on!

Edit: According to Metro all trains will be running all night on Dec. 31 and into Jan. 1 with 20 minute headways. I guess after 2 am you have to pay! -Fred 12/28/07 11:00am
