OCTA reveals March 2010 doomsday scenarios

The Orange County Transportation Authority, like most of L.A. County’s suburban neighbors, must look at another round of service cuts as tax revenues have fallen off sharply during the recession. The worst is to come in March 2010.
OCTA has revealed is various scenarios to reduce more than 300,000 service hours from the system. The most drastic involves killing off a large swath of routes, while others involve adding more short lines and reducing span of service and/or frequencies. Read the PDF for the proposed route eliminations and service reduction in its PDF. Most of the cuts affect routes in northernmost and southern Orange County.
A good source of news and a voice for Orange County’s bus riders is Steven Chan and his TransitRiderOC blog. In his post on the service cuts, Chan doctors up existing OCTA system maps and shows what the route grid would look like when the proposed services are eliminated. It’s a sad sight to see.
He also points to a link to the Pacific Progressive blog, which has pulled out the doomsday scenarios to plain text:

Will Kempton couldn’t have left Caltrans at a worse time. The new OCTA CEO had talked up transit and even began to ride buses on his first days to work. He vowed to find any source of money to keep the system running. He talks a good talk, but how does he do when the Ts are subbed for Ws?

This is just horrible, beyond horrible.
None of the strategies are good strategies, but I can already say I hate strategy B. Proportional service cuts would be stupid because not all bus routes have proportional shares of ridership.
I think you could cut routes like the 147, for example, and it would have a relatively low impact. You want to preserve at much service as possible on routes like the 47, where buses are often full.
There’s no good way to do this and people are going to be severely impacted regardless. I can see people losing jobs or getting a lesser job somewhere closer to home and buying cars they cannot afford because of these cuts.
I hope they keep the eliminating of lines to a minimum. :/
Tragic!
I think some variation of Strategy A is the best option – with one change – keep night owl, even if it means more cutbacks on other lines.
Eliminate some of the lessor used routes in order to keep full service on the core system. Raise fares, maybe as much as double if necessary. Better to pay double than risk losing your job because there is no alternative way to get to/from work.
Legalize and encourage jitney buses, at least until OCTA is able to restore full service.
