Culver CityBus to launch Sepulveda Rapid bus

Mark your calendars, MetroReaders. Culver CityBus is introducing Rapid Line 6 on January 4, 2010. The buses will run between UCLA and the Aviation/I-105 Green Line station, just like regular Line 6. However, unlike Metro, munis can run Rapid lines during rush hours only. Rapid Line 6 will operate between 5:50 a.m. and 10 a.m., then resume from 2:20 p.m. to 7:35 p.m.
Culver City is holding two public hearings at its City Hall, 9770 Culver Blvd., on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The afternoon session is from 2 to 4 p.m., and the evening session is from 6 to 8 p.m. Culver City is also proposing to reduce weekday service on local Line 6 to every 17-20 minutes. City Hall is accessible by Culver CityBus lines 1 and 7 and Metro Line 33. You may also submit comments by calling (310) 253-6569, by e-mail or by mail to:

[...] Culver City to Launch Sepulveda Rapid Bus (Metro Rider) [...]
” unlike Metro, munis can run Rapid lines during rush hours only.”
Why? How does one define rush hour? I think the BBB R3 runs about 3pm-9pm now in the afternoon. I wish they would run it on the weekends as well.
On this line, the demand on Sepulveda is there pretty much all day long. No idea on weekends.
Yes,
I agree with Jonathan:
the Rapid service should be ran all day!
As I already commented (and will comment, once again, on the 9/30 meeting), Sepulveda Blvd is a very busy corridor, especially that it connects with LAx! – where Rapid service is needed throughout the ENTIRE day.
Also,
I am against reducing service to 17-20 minutes. This is pathetic! And this is why most people still continue to drive their cars. Who would want to switch from driving to a bus that runs only every 20 minutes! If anything, service should increase , not DEcrease. Sepulveda Blvd deserves 10-12 minute service, not 17-20 minutes (and buses are already quite crowded).
I’m not aware of any prohibition against muni running Rapid all day.
So where did Culver City find the $$$ to buy new buses? I remember the city council voted last year to cancel the contract for the Rapid 6 buses to save money. Maybe Federal stimulus fund?
Hold on a minute… I just read the PDF… Rapid 6 doesn’t stop at Fox Hills Transit Center? Instead of stopping at Playa, they should make the turn into the Transit Center. I know it will take longer but seems like kind of counter intuitive to run a Rapid line and not go to where most people are waiting to transfer.
When Metro directly operates Rapid service, it obligates itself to providing at least all-day weekday service on all lines. For a few years, 714 provided rush-hour only service, but it now has midday service like all other Rapids.
Munis are free to set their own standards for Rapid service.
bzcat..isn’t the funding from the 15% local return from Measure R?
