  1. Los Angeles County is also the most populous county in the United States, so it doesn’t mean anything. Now, if they did a per capita comparison, it might be more meaningful.

  2. In fact, I just ran a quick analysis… out of the top 10 counties on that list, Los Angeles comes in 10th when ranked on a per capita basis.

  4. I’ve never really seen the benefit of streetcars. Streetcars travel at bus speed but cost a lot more than buses. Not to mention that they can’t be rerouted without tearing up steel track and catenary wire. And what happens if the street on which the streetcar runs gets closed down? Let’s stick to buses unless we’re going to separate the trains from traffic.

  5. You know what Robb, the more I look at the Purdue study, the sillier it gets. It labels Suffolk County in New York as #19 and call it the “New York Metro area”. But Suffolk County is basically half of Long Island, New York City proper has nothing to do with Suffolk County. What we generally consider NYC is made up of 5 counties - New York, Kings, Queens, Bronx, and Richmond. According to Purdue’s own data (Excel), these counties have a combined carbon out put of 14.16 million tons. If we wanted to add Suffolk and Nassau counties to say “New York Metro” the carbon output would go up to 23.54 million tons.

    I have to agree, measuring by county tells us very little, since counties are nothing more than arbitrary political boundries.

  6. But of course McCain is just giving people what they want to hear.

    CO2 emissions are overrated. Water vapor is a more important greenhouse gas, and CO2 does not cause more water vapor to appear in the atmosphere (look at what a recent NASA study has found). I know we pollute, but we have more pressing problems, including ozone pollution which is much worse (I’ve always held the view that local pollution is a lot worse than global pollution, which is highly exaggerated).

    As for young people liking alternate fuel buses, those are just the environmentalist young people who actually know nothing about the environment. Well, he might have a case amongst young people who actually ride the bus. I’d rather ride a clean fuel bus than a diesel bus, but then again, isn’t that everyone?

  7. Well…
    the results are in. I just got a Twitter alarm from Will stating that Bus Tard actually won. The BBB got there in 40 minutes while the MTA was there in 59 minutes. I personally was rooting for Will on the 439 but when he stated the bus was late, things did not look good. Plus it seemed the consensus was he was going to get smoked which he did. I guess this makes me an official transit geek because I actually kept track of the race through Will’s Twitter messages. Congrats go to Bus Tard.
