  1. Article 5: I know nothing of economics but was just thinking the other day about how LA might make the development of its public transit network the cornerstone of a new regional economy, perhaps filling the space left by the aerospace, defense, and high-tech sectors. We could be the Silicon Valley of transit development.

  2. John, that’s a wonderful idea.

The automobile-entitled would say, “This isn’t New York”, but boo hoo to them.

It does seem that gas prices and ever-worsening congestion are beating people into reasonableness.

This would require a level of leadership we have not seen from any politician in office at the local level. It would require tremendous amounts of courage to stand up to a never ending supply of NIMBYs and people who are resentful that Los Angeles’ “DNA” is changing in a way they don’t like and cannot control. But I’m all for it.

    Lots of good articles today.

Kudos to the Big Blue Bus — a class act that allows many people to live a high quality transit oriented lifestyle. Now raise fares to match the MTA, give free intra-service transfers, and use the extra money to run more frequent and more late night service.

That Detroit Free Press article is wonderful. Denver provides a shining example.

  3. Instead of building much-needed transportation infrastructure let’s just give everybody in America $600 because Americans’ track record with money has been just great so far.

Ah, the $600 Chinese economy stimulus package. Mine is immediately going to pay of some old debt and some cheap goods made in China that I will purchase at Target.
