I completely understand all the criticism of the high speed rail initiative. It is very expensive and the ticket price is being low-balled, but I also think the critics are missing something important. Yes it’s expensive, but rail lasts damn near forever. For once, California would be investing in its future.
They keep saying “Oh well Southwest can just add more flights” if demand actually increases. Great. Where? Burbank is trying to reduce its operations and LAX is being strangled to death by lack of runways. Ontario? Woop-de-doo. Not to mention that this would link economies all through central california.
The 5 isn’t in terrible shape, but it is a two-lane highway for hundreds of miles and this state is going to have something insane like 60 million people in it in 2050. We have to stop building things AFTER the problems get out of control. This would be a big infrastructure investment that could eventually take pressure of freight lines and highways all over the state.
When this goes on the ballot (and loses), take note of who spends all the money defeating it. It’s going to be oil companies and airlines.
I have no problem with oil companies and auto companies campaigning against this. I mean they’re trying to defend their businesses. It’s just capitalism. Let’s just make sure that they stick to the facts and make sure that we can get as much support for the rail as possible.
I could swear I’ve read that article about the Green Line somewhere else before . . .
Yeah that green line article is a retread, brought back up because of the assembly bill that’s trying to extend it to LAX. They should’ve made that clearer.
