Transit Oriented Weekend: What’s Hot and How to Get There

Transit Oriented Weekend is a new weekly feature we’re introducing here on MetroRiderLA where every Friday we plan on sharing some things to do over the weekend and how to get to them… Metro style of course.

It looks like the inaugural T.O.W. is going to be like the week the preceded it: cold and soggy. Despite the less than ideal weather we recommend you grab a Metro umbrella, bundle up, wield your Metro Pass and check out some of these events this weekend.

Tonight

Movies are always a good option on rainy days. “There Will Be Blood” starring Daniel Day Lewis is getting stellar reviews and is playing at the Vista in Los Feliz (one of my favorite theaters), just a 4-minute walk from the Vermont/Sunset Red Line Station. I can also highly recommend “Cloverfield” if you’re ready to get your nerves jangled and perhaps get a little motion sick in the theater. You can check it out at the Mann Chinese 6 directly adjacent to the Hollywood/Highland Red Line Station.

  • “There Will Be Blood” at the Vista Theater
    Showtimes: 5:00pm, 8:45pm
    Transit Access: Red Line via Vermont/Sunset Station, Metro 2, 26, 175, 204, 217, 302, Metro Rapid 754, 780
  • “Cloverfield” at the Mann Chinese 6
    Showtimes: 7:00pm, 9:30pm, 11:45pm
    Metro Accessible: Red Line via Hollywood Highland Station; Metro 2, 156, 217, 212, 302, 312, 656; Metro Rapid 780

And of course, check the Metro Trip Planner for transit directions to theaters in your local area.

If a movie’s not your thing, why not check out some wild art Downtown at the Bagavagabond’s Art Explosion. Taking place in the Grand Ballroom of the Pacific Electric Lofts, at 601 S. Main Street, about a 5-minute walk from the Pershing Square Red Line Station, this art show promises live music, interactive art, silk screening, a photo booth, buffoonery, and tons of art to purchase under $50. Oh ya, and maybe free Newcastle and Red Bull. $10 will get you in the door and $1..25 will get you there if you go Metro.

  • Bagavagabond’s Art Explosion at the Grand Ballroom of the Pacific Electric Lofts
    601 S. Main Street, Los Angeles 90014
    8pm - 1am
    Metro Accessible: Metro Red Line via Pershing Square Station; Metro 16, 18, 33, 38, 53, 55, 62, 71, 90, 91, 92,316, 328, 333; Metro Rapid 720, 740, 745

Saturday

This is probably dependent on the weather, but the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition is holding its 1st Annual Walk, Ride, and Roll in the Park event about bicycle safety at the Los Angeles State Historic Park, adjacent to the Chinatown Gold Line Station. Bring your kids and teach them about safe biking and Metro riding.

Another event on Saturday for the civic minded is the community meeting for the Hollywood Freeway Central Park. Located at the Selma Elementary School auditorium, a 5-minute walk from the Hollywood/Highland Red Line Station, this event gives you the opportunity to learn more about the project and voice your opinion.

  • Hollywood Freeway Central Park Communtiy Meeting at the Selma Elementary School Auditorium
6611 Selma Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90028
    9am - 1pm
    Metro Accessible: Metro Red Line via Hollywood/Highland Station; Metro 2, 156, 212, 217, 302; Metro Rapid 780

Bloggers just love snark and sarcasm, as evidenced from our posts and comments, so why not head over to Skylight Books on Saturday evening to hear the editors of The Onion read from “Our Dumb World: The Onion’s Atlas of the Planet Earth“. Skylight Books is in Los Feliz, about a 10-minute walk from the Vermont/Sunset Red Line Station.

  • The Onion Editors Read at Skylight Books
    1818 N. Vermont Avenue,Los Angeles, CA 90027
    5:00pm
    Metro Accessible: Metro Red Line via Vermont/Sunset Station; Metro 2, 26, 175, 180, 181, 204, 206, 217, 302; Metro Rapid 720, 740, 745

Sunday

If you like sex, this event might be of interest to you. If not, Sunday is a great day to go to church. LoveLA is the “first even Sexual Health, Education, and Entertainment Exhibition”. LoveLA is being held at Boulevard 3, a trendy bar/lounge venue on Sunset Boulevard, a 10-minute walk away from the Hollywood/Vine Red Line Station. LoveLA sets itself apart as a classy sex exhibition in contrast to some of the raunchier events held in Los Angeles. Tickets to the event go for $25.

  • LoveLA at Boulevard 3
    6523 W. Sunset Blvd. Hollywood, CA 90028
    11:00am - 7:00pm
    Metro Accessible: Metro Red Line via Hollywood/Vine Station; Metro 2, 210, 212, 217, 302; Metro Rapid 780

  1. I live in Sac, but I had a Transit Oriented Weekend in L.A. too ! Rode the Metrolink Orange County Line weekend service up to Union Station last Sunday. Took the Red Line to Hollywood/Western and walked over to the FREE Safari Sam’s Americana Brunch on Sunset. I then walked back to the Red Line and rode up to Hollywood/Vine, where I enjoyed Happy Hour with a friend before heading over to Kabuki on Vine for sushi. I could have also gone to Arc Light, The Pantages or shopping at Amoeba. It took no more time than driving and I was home before my friend got back to Reseeda. Who says there’s no transit in L.A. ?

  2. That’s awesome Transit Planner. Look at all you were able to do in LA socially without having the “necessary” car. Nice job!
