Bon Voyage

I will be leaving today for a two-week vacation in Europe. I’m excited to check out European transit systems from the angle of a tourist and a Los Angeles transit advocate for the first time (last time I was in Europe I was still a driver). Destinations will include Paris, Bordeaux, London, and Dublin - expect reports on each of them upon my return.
Until then posting may be light, it’s up to the other contributors, but I’m sure you all will keep busy in the comments section modding one another down until everyone is labeled “troll”.
Take it easy MetroRider’s.

Have a great time, Fred!
London is amazing as is it transit system. When ever some silly BRU idiot says “L.A. is not New York”, I always point to London where I lived briefly as a shining example that a vast sprawling city can successfully have a comprehensive, multi-modal mass transit network. There is lots of commuter rail, heavy rail, light rail, bus and ferry transportation. Watch out for those roundabouts and don’t forget to look the other direction when watching the street.
Paris also has marvelous transportation. I also loved Berlin’s system as well.
Cannot wait to hear all about it when you return!
And don’t forget to MIND THE GAP!
london is great, but bring some extra dough. it is crazy expensive. the whole zone thing really eats up your cash.
take the eurostar if you can. it is really amazing.
have fun.
Paris Metro and RER is amazing.
And look at the pic you posted, no grade separation!
I know! I saw that.
Take pictures, Fred, and send them to FixExpo when you get back.
Comparing a one-car tram that can hold 5-15 mph with station stops every 0.25 miles to 6-car 225-ton “light rail” train traveling 35-55 mph with station stops every mile is like comparing a 747 to a model airplane.
We great at attempting to confuse the two in Los Angeles.

Fred,
If you have a chance to read this before you get to London, please make sure you check out the Transit Museum. It is glorious and well done. For a public transit enthusiast, it is all you could hope it would be. In addition to all the modes of travel, I loved the map room that had all kinds of different types of maps. The evolution of the London style map is a great story.
The L.A. Times ran article about the London Transport Museum in their travel section:

When some BRU idiot throws out the argument that “L.A. is not New York and is too big for anything other than a bus-only transit system,” one can always point to London, a sprawling city with a dozen subways, countless commuter lines, light rail, ferries, etc, and yes, an amazing bus system, and a large congestion charging zone.
