We really do need the Purple Line to go down Wilshire to Santa Monica via Century City.
Boi from Troy does express what many of us know. The Wilshire alignment is insufficient by itself. Jody Litvak said in City Beat that they were surprised by the number of people who wanted a westward extension from Highland/Hollywood.
There are really two ways to do that. Via Santa Monica Blvd. to Century City, expressed on the MTA’s potential alignment map, or some form of crosstown zig zag involving La Cienega and/or Fairfax. When travelling to/from the Westside many people need to go north/south. There needs to be some way of connecting from the Red/Purple Line without going all the way to Koreatown. Some sort of zig zag could connect the Red, Purple and Expo lines and hit many popular destinations.
Johnny, a poster here, proposed something like:
Hollywood/Highland
Sunset/La Brea
Sunset/Fairfax
Santa Monica/Fairfax
Beverly/Fairfax (The Grove)
Beverly/La Cienega
(Beverly Center/Cedar Sinai)
La Cienega/Wilshire
La Cienega/Pico
La Cienega/Venice
Expo Line
I prefer the straight shot Santa Monica Blvd. alignment indicated on the map:
Hollywood/Highland
Santa Monica/La Brea
Santa Monica/Fairfax
Santa Monica/La Cienega
Santa Monica/San Vicente
Santa Monica/Beverly Hills Civic Ctr
Santa Monica/Wilshire
Century City
This will enable people in the Valley to more easily access the westside which is increasingly as much a commuting destination as downtown.
I was glad to hear Jody Litvak say she heard a lot of support for an alignment from LAX up to UCLA over the hill and into the Valley, but that’s not really part of the Westside extension.
But even though I do believe there needs to be a second alignment of some sort, whether it is the crosstown zig zag or Santa Monica Blvd., the truth is the Wilshire Blvd. is really the top priority and the second line, while important, should not replace the Wilshire-Century City-Santa Monica Purple Line extension.
If the purple line went to the Grove and Beverly Center, with no alignment on Wilshire Blvd, it would be primarily recreational rather than functional.
thats pretty much exactly wut i sent in today. giving them the hwood/highland extension west ideas, but really summing up the fact that the purple line is the top priority no question about it and while the “pink” line or whatever it might called is extremely important as well, the purple to the sea is the most by far.
the metrobloggingLA post is a little much. yes we all want a lot of metro, but asking for an entirely new station there is so far out of the plans its pointless to even express seriously. jason’s theory about that area in between “blowing up” because of all the insane (in a good way) building around and on top of noho and universal city, are right, however, the response from metro:
There are no plans to build a Red Line Station between North Hollywood and Universal Stations. Simply stated the cost would prohibitive.
is pretty much on point. right now there are much more pressing issues to put money towards.
Thanks for the mention Dan. I sent mine in today, including that route. I also put that the Purple line should come first, pretty much. Finding funds for just the Purple line is hard enough. Hopefully, a complete Purple line will show the potential mass transit has in LA, and future projects will become progressively easier.
