Orange County Transportation Authority — but not the 60-foot buses with the stylish accordion centers. It already has those.

ARTIC is the acronym for the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center, a Grand Central Terminal for Orange County. It would be built on or near the present Anaheim Metrolink and Amtrak station, which just happens to have Anaheim Stadium next door and the Honda Center a long block away. Anaheim city officials are calling this area the “Platinum Triangle”.

Orange County Register reports that OCTA is hosting a conference on October 29 to discuss development opportunities on the 16 acres the transit agency has purchased. The agency hopes developers would offset the costs of building a bus and train hub on a part of the stadium. Presently, the Anaheim Station is a small staffed platform with only rush-hour Metrolink feeder buses going on the property. Passengers must walk a far distance to catch nearby local buses.

  1. Leave it to a transit agency to buy raw land at the top of the market.

And just why do they need 15 acres of development before buses can re-route to the platform?

This is an agenda in search of a justification.

  2. The “Far Distance” between the Anaheim Amtrak/MetroLink Station and local OCTA bus route 50 isn’t actually all that great as the crows flies. But you have to know the circuitous back exit from the platform, which then wends its way through an office park to the nearest bus stop on Katella Ave. Sort of the transit equivalent of Steve McQueen and “The Great Escape”.

  4. How about getting Disney to build a monorail between Anaheim Metrolink station/stadiums and the Disneyland resort/Anaheim Convention Center?

Well, the BART Coliseum Station is similar in that it is located next to McAfee Coliseum and Oracle Arena, and nothing else… the station gets very busy during A’s, Raiders, and Warriors games. Then again, BART runs every 3-10 minutes or so with the three lines (Richmond-Fremont, SF/Daly City-Fremont, Millbrae/SFO/SF-Dublin/Pleasanton) that run through that alignment.

  6. It should be pointed out that the BART Coliseum station is also the connection point to the AirBART shuttle bus to/from Oakland Airport.

I also wonder if Disney’s response to the monorail idea would be “sure, as long as we get our admission price as part of the fare” …
