Attack of the 65-foot artics
[tags]los angeles, san fernando valley, orange line, bus rapid transit[/tags]
A prototype fleet of 65-foot NABI articulated buses begins service on the Metro Orange Line this Monday. The buses are 5 feet longer than the legally allowed limit of 60 feet. These buses can only run on the Orange Line and on surface streets in Warner Center and to Division 8 in Chatsworth.
With five extra seats, the buses have room for 9 additional seats (66 versus 57 on the 60-footers) and a maximum capacity of 100.

This thread is useless without pics.
The only pictures available of the new artics are with Metro, and using its stock photography requires written permission.
The Times used a Metro photo.
At least one will run tomorrow. It’s a high 9400 number.
The bus looks like the 60-footer, except there’s now a black band around the windows similar to the Silver Streak.
Which, of course, means that you will not be able to tell how many riders are actually on the damned thing unless it is dark. It makes drive-by passenger counts much more difficult (and actually reduces visibility at night, since the tinting works the other way in the dark).
Hopefully….the next motion after the success of the 65 footer bus, is Metro rail.
The bus fleet number is either 9495 or 9485, I couldn’t see it well on TV (I had no access to KCAL’s HD newscast at work). I have yet to have seen it during today’s commute. Other than the full black band on the windows, there is a wheel cover for the front that stays put with weights similar to those hubcap ads on taxis.
