You Like Our Subway? Cool.

Ticket Counter at Union Station, Los Angeles

Curbed had a post a few days ago about a reporter from Philly who came to LA and really enjoyed our rail system. Like a lot. Probably more then we do. The article he wrote gives a bit of insight in to how a tourist sees our city. I especially like what he says about the fare honor system:

“L.A.’s high-speed transit is - are you sitting down, preferably on a subway bench? - based on the honor system. You can’t crawl under the turnstiles to con Metro; there are none. No one collects a ticket.”

Now if everyone could take the system for what it is, we would be a much happier Los Angeles.

  1. Totally agreed. We need more development along Vermont Avenue, it’s a total deadzone. No real destinations except the LA trade tech (? or some school there?). Why haven’t we seen any proposals for the Vermont corrider?

  2. Wilshire Vermont station (at Wilshire and Vermont, of course) is about to open. Brand new building with new apartments and street level retail.

The retail spaces are not filled yet, but let’s give it some time.

  3. Wilshire is developing well..that’s not a problem, but the other 2 Vermont stations (not on Wilshire or Hollywood) are HUGE potentials for multi-use high rises. Let’s get them developed! Hopefully this was not Prop C’s doing.

  4. Vermont/santa monica has la city college and not much else and vermont/bev is pretty much lacking of anything. There some restuarants and a 76 but I find it hard to imagine the overhaul of those areas to introduce such mixed use high rises without serious opposition. Especially knowing the prices those housing TODs are fetching. Unless they can guarentee low income housing with each new building built now way will those stops get spruced up. and vermont/sunset is already a pretty fulfilled destination, tho that jons sux pretty bad so tearing that whole block down and putting some useful things there would be cool. Tho such a hope would probably just be fulfilled by more scientology buildings. Guess the jons will have to do.
