Mmm … underground burger

You know Metro is really hard-up for money when it rescinded a long-standing policy to ban advertising on trains.

Curbed LA reveals one of the first major advertisers to buy station space is McDonalds for its new 1/3-pound angus burger. Curbed has photos of the ads placed on the Figueroa Boulevard entrance of the 7th Street/Metro Center station for the Red/Purple and Blue lines. These ads are also on the sides of some rail cars.

McDonalds has probably not counted on the ingenuity of Los Angeles’ Tagger-American community. Look for all the “g”s to disappear.

  1. There’s already ads in Union Station, huge ugly ones. :( I was so disappointed to find them, I think probably first on Monday.

  3. I just find it funny how they went from no ads (I assume for aesthetic reasons) to some of the biggest and most obtrusive ads around. I don’t mind it, but 7th Metro certainly looks like it’s owned by McDonalds now.

  4. UGH! Yeah the ones at Union Station are just gross. It’s these giant posters advertising a boxing fight between two ugly mugs plastered all over.

  5. If McDonalds wants to subsidize our transit, let ‘em.

  6. Raphael: Can they really be paying that much? I’ve got my doubts, personally. Union Station is busy, but it ain’t Grand Central Terminal (the last transit place where I saw ads as ugly and obnoxious as those, also done by TV people - USA Network UGH). GCT and MTANYC let USA Network re-paint the tunnels under the commuter rail tracks at GCT, it was *obnoxious*. But so is this.

i agree completely. plaster it up. that money is well needed as we’ve all discussed an ample amount of time on this board. we can’t all talk about how we want all these things like rail and rapid and on time buses at the same time that metro is losing their ass everyday and then complain when they outfit stations for a new and (hopefully) abundant source of revenue. like raphael said,

If McDonalds wants to subsidize our transit, let ‘em.

not to mention, its entertaining as hell.

  8. No. They are not entertaining. They are ugly. But I say put ‘em up anyway. Metro needs the money.

I have learned since I was a small child to ignore the massive number of advertising messages that are beamed my way constantly here in the USA. Billboards, radio spots, TV commercials, ads in newspapers. I don’t allow them to register. And I very rarely eat at McDonald’s. They’re wasting their money on me.
The consumer society is a constant battlefield, and the target is your wallet. I wear my shield of apathy and cynicism proudly, and it protects me just fine.
