MetroRider Roll Call!

Contributed by Fred Camino on February 23rd, 2007 at 2:19 am

Okay. I know you’re out there. I know you guys are reading this. But I don’t know who you are. Tell me MetroRiders. Show me some love.

If you’re reading this, what I’m asking you to do is simple:

  1. Look at the headline. It should say “MetroRider Roll Call!”
  2. After the headline, in a lighter shade of gray you should see a number. If you are reading this early it will probably be a low number, like a 0 or 1. If you are reading this later, hopefully that number will be much higher. That number represents the number of comments this post has.
  3. Click whatever number you see. The number should turn red before you click it. That means it’s working.
  4. A new page will load. Scroll down to the very bottom. You will see the words “Leave a Comment” followed by some forms. This is the comment form.
  5. In the space that says “Name” leave a name. It doesn’t have to be your real name (but it can be). It can be a silly name like BigMike69z or MyBallsRonFyre. It can be more serious like JaneTransit or Bill McBride. Basically just put anything there because it’s required.
  6. Next put in your email address. This is required to prove you are not some sort of spam bot or something, but don’t worry, it won’t be published for other spam bots to see. It stays hidden. Just do it pleaaaase.
  7. If you have a website you’d like to share, put the URL in the next space. Doing this will make your name (the one you entered in Step 5) clickable so that when someone clicks your name they will be magically transported to your website. It’s like free advertising.
  8. In the big box type the following: “I’m a MetroRider!
  9. That’s all that you are required to do, but if you like you can write a little more about yourself and your transit habbits. Maybe tell us something you like about MetroRiderLA or something hate. Maybe say what you like about L.A. transit or what you hate. Honestly, you can write whatever the hell you want if you wish… it can be a list of expletives and vulagarities for all I care. I’ll probably get a kick out of that actually.
  10. Click the button that says “Say It!
  11. You’re done!

Remember, you must do this if you are reading this post! If I find some sneaky IP address that came to this page and didn’t post a comment, I’m going to be really pissed. I mean it. And this is for everyone, not just lurkers. If your name is Tyke Johson, or Wad, or Aaron… I want to see you guys represent. But this is especially for lurkers. If you’ve read this site but never commented… I want you to show your internet face! No more sneaking. Say it loud and proud, “I’m a MetroRider!

PS - I will be really embarassed if there’s only like 2 comments on this post.

  1. I’m a MetroRider! That’s right, I’m not exempt from this little game either. My name is Fred Camino, and I’m the creator of this here blog about the Los Angeles Public Transit Lifestyle. I live a car-free life in Downtown Los Angeles and effing love it. I’ve lived in LA for almost 4 years, been completely car-free for about 1.5 years, but was essentially car-free for the other 2.5 (owned it but rarely drove it, the poor thing just collected soot and parking tickets). I like adventures, nice weather, electronic gadgets, and boobs.

    Who’s next?

  2. I’m a MetroRider! Been living in LA for 10 years with out a car and if I never hear that song, no body walks in LA, I’ll be happy….interested in urban sociology - specifically the social role of transit, (and complete streets concepts) as well as all the other related good stuff, quality of life, environmental, public health…this past year started working at SCAG - a long term planning agency.

  3. I’m a MetroRider! Well, sorta. I’m a Trolley rider from San Diego. It’s nice to see what other, big cities do with their light-rail and subway systems. I’ve been commuting by trolley for about four years now, and for almost a whole year now, I’ve been biking part of my commute. The reason I bought my house is so I can take the train to work. I’m not car-free (I still use it to do the shopping on weekends and visit my girlfriend) but putting only 5,000 miles on my car in a year is an accomplishment in Southern California.

This is, incidentally, the third comment.

  5. I’m a MetroRider! Ventura Division. I have always loved trains — when I lived in San Diego I loved having my bus pass, and would take the Coaster and Trolley and buses whenever practical. I live in Simi Valley now and for quite a while I was taking VISTA and SCAT to a job in Ojai. I also would train it home (Amtrak or Metrolink) when practical. Over the years I used to work downtown L.A. and take an Express from where I lived in Cheviot Hills. Right now I’m working in Brentwood and it’s not practical at all to public transit, but I may be working in SFV or nearer to downtown L.A. next, and I’m hoping I can do a Bike->Train->Bus-gt;Bike type solution there. I keep hoping! I read this blog to stay up on what’s available out there.

  8. I’m a MetroRider! As a student without a drivers’ license, I ride a bus (217/780) to the Red Line to another bus (156) to get from my house to North Hollywood High School. Metro pisses me off daily, because buses are usually late and don’t abide by any schedule while trains run on time. My #1 metro request would be signs at Metro Rail stations - both underground and aboveground - letting me know when the next train is coming so that I know whether I need to vault down the stairs to barely make my train or whether I should just catch a bus along the same route because I missed the train.

I’ve also become a pro at messing with the Trip Planner to get it to spit out the best route, and Public Routes still isn’t cutting it either — my #2 request is a better decent trip planner, preferably with Google Transit.

  9. Dammit. Must oney slavishly anything a transit advocate desires. Choo-Choo to the sea? Damn the expense, full speed ahead. Ignore the Expo cost overruns? Hell yes and plan for an extension as well.

Time for me to come out of the bus shelter:
    I am a Metrorider!
Whew, liberating. I should mention that the route I use is nearly always full end to end. The mix is about 50:50 men and women, 80% White (non-Hispanic), 10% Asian/Pacific. Average age is probably 50. Every single rider owns at least one automobile. Fares are by far and away among the highest in the entire MTA structure. So are speeds.
I especially like when heavy demand causes the MTA to add those cushy commuter buses to the rotation; reclining seats, television, sweet. Ahhh this is the way transit should be, fast, convienient and expensive.

  10. I’m (kinda) a metro rider! Very interested in LA mass transit coming from the east coast it’s taken me awhile to discover it. I’m starting to make the switch to a more car free lifestyle but it’s hard with some of my job requirements. Whenever i can i ride it form van nuys (orange line) to hollywood (red line) and then down to wilshire (either 710 at vine or 720 at wilshire/vermont)

  11. I wish I was a MetroRider. Instead I’m a 10 freeway driver who suffers from a suicide inducing amount of traffic on a daily basis just to get between home and work. I took the bus twice from downtown to Santa Monica and the first time it took me 2 hours and 30 minutes (one-way) and the second time it took me 2 hours and 15 minutes. Subway to the Sea ASAP!!!!

  12. I’m a MetroRider! Sometimes.

I sometimes use the Gold Line on the weekends to go into LA. (I live near the other end of the Gold Line.)

If the Gold Line were extended in the other direction, then I’d use it every day. (I work in Claremont.)

Yeah, I know the other lines under construction will get more use, but if I could choose just one line to build, I would choose to build the foothill extension to the Gold Line because that’s what I would ride every day.

And no, I can’t take a bus to work. That would take 90-120 minutes according to the MTA trip planner, which would be silly.

  13. Call me a Mass Transit rider.. but it doesnt start with Metro.. San Diego Transit, OCTA, LBT, Big Blue Bus, CAT, RTD Denver, MUNI, AC Transit, BART, VTA, CalTrain, Foothill Transit, King County Metro, TriMet, TransLink Vancouver, CTA, NCTD, Metrolink, Metra, UTA and of course LACMTA.. yes i still call it by that.. but thats because there are so many systems with Metro in its name.. i gotta separate em. :)I’m coming up on 20 years old, have rode Mass Transit in some form or another since i was 6. I dont have my drivers license, rather use transit. Save money.. go on worldwide trips. That sums it up.

  16. I’m a Metro Rider! Been so for about 3 years now. 2 years in Japan and 1 here. I live downtown and work in koreatown. Take the Purple line everyday and love it. Public transit has it’s faults in LA, but it’s a million billion times better than driving.

PS, I’ve lived in LA for just over a year and I can count on two hands how many times I’ve driven. If anyone wants to buy a 97 Jeep Wrangler, holla back

  17. I’m a MetroRider! I’ve been riding before I could walk, and I’ve been a lifelong Angeleno.

My mother and grandmother did not own a car, but made sure to live where the service was frequent enough to not be bound by schedules and infrequent buses.

I used to resent taking the bus, but as I got to know more about transit the more I appreciated it.

I moved in to Koreatown before the subway opened in 1996, but when it did, it improved transit by magnitudes. Not only was there frequent service in Koreatown, but a 5-10 minute ride downtown connects me with a bus ride in just about every direction.

I’ve expanded my appreciation for transit to try systems in other cities and learn from them.

  20. “I’m a MetroLink Rider!” Yikes, 2 round trips to DTLA Thursday, 1 Friday. Way too much transit for one week. But my Purple/Red Line connections worked for a change, so I didn’t get stranded on my trip to the 11:40 a.m. Metrolink.

Yeah, I’ve got a website, the Spammers Favorite discussion Board, the weekly eNewsletter and the Monthly Print Newsletter.

It’s great to see all the other blogs pop up to cover this topic.

  22. I’m a MetroRider and have been riding off and on for 22 years, mostly lines 20/720, 33/333, 4/304, 2/302, 105, 217, Red Line and Purple Line. I can only take so much driving, ugh, so by Friday, I’m on transit, reading the paper and not giving a damn if I’m running late…My friends think I’m nuts when I take the bus to Century City from West Hollywood, but it beats being hassled by the parking lot. WeHo’s bus shelters are designed by French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, so far, the standard to beat. Now if those cheap SOB’s running Beverly Hills and Century City would just install some damned bus shelters themselves…any shelter/shade would be nice, but in light of the neighborhood wealth factor, I’d prefere nice ones, with solar powered LED lighting, seat warmers and an expresso cart. Ha, we’ll probably get the subway extended first.

That said, I am a religious red line rider, and its great to see people pushing Metro in the right direction.

In the 90’s, I was forced. I had no car for about 5 years.

Since 1997, I have owned a car, but I only use it once or twice a week. I take Metro the rest of the time. MetroRail whenever possible. Can’t wait for the Eastside extension and the Expo Line! Can’t wait to take the Gold Line to Ontario Airport!

While I know the joys of NYC living, I also know what it’s like to live where there is little to no public transit.

LA is kind of a medium (not always happy), but at least I’ve always managed to get where I’m going. Eventually.

  38. I have lived in both downtown Long Beach and downtown LA and I am a metro rider and I have been for about 7 years. To be a good metro rider you need to come prepared. Memorize you lines, know your surroundings, and understand that you will be required to walk a couple (3-4) blvds every now and then. However, what makes me mad are those who put down the metro system, but complain about being stuck in their cars on the 405.

As a downtown resident, you can make it to the grocery store without a car. There are the Japanese markets (two huge ones), grand central market, and trader Joes off the gold line. Invest in some good grocery bags, as they will serve you well.

My only requests I have for MTA are for more security on the blue line train at night. People get robbed on that train all the time.

Other than that, I am making MTA work for me.
