Suggested Rider Resolutions

Are you still working on the list of New Years resolutions for 2007? Are your current plans a little hackneyed, or just straight up unachievable? Why not make some transit resolutions? MetroRiderLA has a few suggestions…
- Go Car-Free: That’s right. I put the biggest one first. Why? Because this one kills many birds with one stone. Want to get in shape this year? Go car-free. Instead of driving everywhere, you’ll force yourself to walk and ride your bike more. Imagine that. And save yourself the costly gym membership. Maybe you are looking to save a little more money in 2007? Well by going car-free, you’re going to be potentially saving yourself thousands of dollars. Thats right, you won’t even have to give up your Cafe Macchiato’s. Maybe you were thinking of doing your part for the environment this year? Well, it goes without saying that choosing a car-free lifestyle will dramatically decrease your “carbon footprint”. Plus, since you’ll be riding a bus, you’ll avoid the smugness (and expense) that comes with driving a hybrid. The best part of going car-free? In Los Angeles, it’s entirely doable.
- Share The Public Transit Lifestyle: Learn to share in 2007. You’ve discovered this awesome Los Angeles lifestyle, don’t be greedy, share it will your friends! After all, the culture of public transit is only made better when more people join the fray. Take a buddy on a train ride. Take a friend to the mall on a bus. Show them how much fun can be had in this city when you have someone else deal with the driving.
- Get Involved: Read the local transit blogs. Start a local transit blog. Comment frequently on MetroRiderLA. Contribute something to MetroRiderLA! Write the MTA and tell them what you think. Go to a Transit Coalition meeting. Write a review on the MetroRiderLA Yelp! page. Add some photos to the MetroRiderLA Flickr Group. Leave a comment on the MetroRiderLA MySpace page. Let your voice be heard!
- Ride, Ride, and Ride: Can’t make the car-free commitment? Well at least consider that LA has an extensive public transit system each time you decide to leave home. Check your options, consult the Metro Trip Planner, see if it is at all possible to make your trip without driving. Look at our Yelp map and pick a random place for a transit excursion. Pack a book, an open mind, and enjoy the ride!
Anyone have any more suggestions for transit resolutions in 2007?

when you hear someone say “la’s public transit is terrible” followed by “i’m from new york.” tie their shoes together so they fall. then when they’re down, explain to the person they were just speaking to that the poor clutz doesn’t know what he’s talking about. then talk of the many great things about la public transit, walking away just as the person is getting back up, saying aloud… just check out metroriderLA!!!
also; everyone on this site and elsewhere who ride metro know of its many problems. perhaps its the same old complaint about being on time, etc. perhaps its something new, but whatever it is, as a new years resolution, take the time to email metro and not just complain about it. endless complaining won’t get things done, but contructive and consistent emails from you and your fellow riders will show that things need to be done. i know its probably hard to imagine anybody at the Taj would even read the email let alone do antyhing about it, but it’s worth a try.
i would never assume that anyone on this site is guilty of this, but if so, please never leave your trash, newspapers or whatever, on the bus. in fact, if someone else does, take the second to throw it out after them. just cuz they’re terribly selfish and don’t respect anything, doesn’t mean the rest of the ridership should suffer. a clean public transit system is a functional system i think, and more importantly, a very important characteristic of attracting newbs is for metro to keep up a clean appearance (that and ALOT more of course). it might help them forgive the guy asleep in the back wearing a jockstrap as a hat.
a note: if said paper/trash is left by said guy with jockstrap on his head and the like, its forgivable to leave paper/trash for who knows what might come with it.
What I like to do is to stitch in public transit on my otherwise more esoteric scribblings. The character of an event you attend isn’t complete unless you describe the transit that brought you there and took you home.
Joseph: It adds to the experience too, no? I continue to dream of the day they extend the hours on the MetroRail to facilitate some great LA nightlife transit stories. Nightlife or daytime, any event reached by public transit is by default a more interesting experience.
