Meeting John Scott

Contributed by Wad on October 3rd, 2006 at 7:21 pm

John Scott is a familiar name throughout Los Angeles. Stickers promoting his web site have been affixed to Metro equipment, street furniture, telephones and newsracks.

Scott, it turns out, is a real person and not some post-modern hipster inside joke like Obey the Giant.

Scott was aboard the Red Line, in person, carrying a briefcase with white and orange versions of his web site stickers.

Normally, links aplenty would be provided to content appearing on this site. Not in this case. The stickers are vandalism, and the last thing this guy needs or deserves is validation through higher page views. This will only lead to more stickers.

I do not know what Scott does, and because his stickers are so annoying, I won’t visit his site to figure out his angle.

While riding, he talked up the riders in the car and was handing out more of his stickers. So he has co-conspirators in his quest for publicity by sponging the commons.

But, John Scott is a real person, and it’s always interesting to associate a person with a meme. Or, at the very least, if there’s a reward on his head for serial vandalism.

  3. I saw John Scott one day on Third/Fairfax…black guy with briefcase full of stickers and file folders, right?

I HATE seeing those stickers on Metro buses; reminds me of a cult. And how does he get them so far down in those see-through plastic rider alert holders??

  6. I looked at his website years ago.

His website had NOTHING on it except for scans of articles from newspapers in other cities (quite far away from LA) that mentioned him and his stupid stickers in passing. Apparently he was taken to court for pasting up these same stupid stickers.

Now the website is slightly more advanced, looks like the Web circa 1997 instead of 1994. He’s selling the stupid stickers as well as t-shirts and hats, along with building his brand and his mystique. But there’s really no info regarding what his quest is all about, if he has any political position, what he wants or who he is.

Who is John Scott? Who Gives A Crap.
