Destination OC

There will be more people driving to Orange County for work in 20 years, even from L.A. County, according to this Los Angeles Times article.

The Orange County Transportation Authority is spending billions to widen roads, add commuter rail service and increase the bus fleet.

One expansion is coming September 11. OCTA starts its third OC Express service, Line 794, from Costa Mesa to Riverside and Corona. Two other services are currently operating, running to Pomona, Diamond Bar and Chino. OCTA purchased cutaway buses with commuter amenities such as reclining seats and laptop trays.

Two older commuter routes run from downtown L.A. to Fullerton and Huntington Beach. These do not have the new small buses.

Orange County now has Metrolink service seven days a week on both Los Angeles and Inland Empire service.

Orange County has grown tremendously as not only a large bedroom community, but a major jobs magnet as well, from the theme-park-and-entertainment hub of Anaheim to the industrial zones near the 91 freeway, to the white-collar edgeburbs of Irvine, Costa Mesa, Santa Ana and Orange.

OCTA’s CEO Art Leahy is overseeing this expansion, and while he failed at getting support for the county’s light rail plan, he’s still making sure OCTA grows with the county. He’s been profiled in two transit-related trade publications, Mass Transit and Metro.

The transportation situation is far from ideal in Orange County, but the service is targeted to the travel needs in, out and within the service sphere.

  1. this is good news. a guy i work with is always complaining about the lack of public transit in the OC (where he lives) so i’ll pass this along.

  2. Except, of course, they aren’t expanding bus service. New Measure M has the Metrolink-to-midnight plan, a total waste of money. Virtually no sales tax funds go to bus service.

  3. Metrolink-to-midnight is a good idea if it goes all the way to Los Angeles. I-5 is busy all the time, why wouldn’t Metrolink as well ?
